House Call Doctor Thousand Oaks began with a simple idea: medicine could be more personal.

​

After more than 20 years practicing Family and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ellen Crowe had seen healthcare from nearly every angle. She cared for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments and saw firsthand how difficult it could be to navigate a system of rushed appointments, long waits, multiple specialists, and fragmented care.

​

When a move to California brought a new chapter in her personal life, it also created an opportunity to rethink how she wanted to practice medicine.

​

Over the course of many conversations with her husband, Paul, three questions kept coming up:

 

What would it take to practice medicine differently?
What if recommendations weren't dictated by insurance?
And what would patients gain if their doctor truly had the time to know them?

 

The answer became increasingly clear: We can do better.

In 2011, Dr. Crowe and Paul co-founded House Call Doctor Thousand Oaks.

​

Ellen brought decades of clinical experience and a whole-person approach to medicine. Paul brought business leadership and operational expertise. Together, they built a physician-owned practice around something that can be surprisingly difficult to find in modern healthcare: time, access, continuity, and a doctor who sees the whole picture.

At HCDTO, we don't want to look at one symptom, one diagnosis, or one specialist's piece of the puzzle in isolation. Our physicians take the time to bring those pieces together — your medical history, medications, specialists, symptoms, lifestyle, concerns, and, most importantly, your goals.

Sometimes that means noticing a subtle change others have missed. Sometimes it means coordinating between specialists. And sometimes it simply means knowing a patient well enough to recognize that something isn't right from the moment we hear their voice.

House calls allow us to practice medicine in a way that feels both modern and refreshingly personal.

Instead of navigating traffic, crowded clinics, and waiting rooms, our patients receive high-quality medical care in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. We get to spend more time listening, asking questions, understanding your environment, and getting to know you beyond what fits into a medical chart.

And because HCDTO remains fully physician-owned, our recommendations are guided by what our physicians believe is best for the patient — not by an insurance company's requirements.

Today, our team brings together more than 200 years of combined physician experience, while holding onto the same philosophy that started the practice in 2011.
